My latest piece, "the white dress." represents an exciting journey into the interplay of texture and emotive portraiture. Working with acrylic and graphite on paper, I sought to capture a sense of introspection and vulnerability.
The process began with loose graphite sketches to establish the figure's pose and basic composition. I then built up layers of acrylic, focusing on creating a vibrant blue background that contrasts with the stark white of the dress. This juxtaposition serves to heighten the emotional impact of the piece.

I paid particular attention to the impasto technique in rendering the subject's face, using thicker layers of paint to create depth and subtle shadows. This approach allows the viewer to sense the dimensionality of the figure, inviting a closer examination of the subject's expression.
The intentionally rough brushstrokes in the dress add a sense of movement and ephemerality to the piece. I found this textural element crucial in conveying the dreamlike quality suggested by the challenge theme, "What Dreams May Come."
This 8" x 4.5" work pushes my exploration of intimate portraiture, blending realism with expressive brushwork to evoke a mood rather than capture a precise likeness. It's a direction I'm excited to continue developing in future pieces.
