Exploring Movement and Connection: Works in Progress

I find myself constantly drawn to the interplay between figures and their environments. Two of my current works in progress exemplify this fascination, each approaching the theme from a unique perspective.
"little dancer." (Acrylic and Graphite on Canvas, 16" x 20") captures a moment of joyous abandon. The piece employs a limited palette, contrasting the warm ochres of the figure and sand against the cool blues of the water and sky. I've used loose, gestural brushstrokes to convey a sense of movement, particularly in the flowing dress and upraised arms of the central figure. The horizon line, placed low in the composition, emphasizes the expansive, moody sky. As I continue to refine this piece, I'm focused on striking a balance between the atmospheric background and the dynamic figure, aiming to make the latter the clear focal point without losing the evocative quality of the surroundings.

In contrast, "unbroken circle." (Acrylic and Graphite on Canvas, 28" x 28") explores connection and unity. This piece features three figures on a beach, their bodies forming a circular composition that draws the eye around the canvas. The muted color palette, dominated by soft blues and whites, creates a dreamy, almost ethereal atmosphere. I've employed a more painterly approach here, with visible brushstrokes adding texture and depth to the figures and background alike. As I continue to revisit this piece, I'm contemplating how to further emphasize the sense of connection between the figures while maintaining the overall serene or perhaps dark mood.
Both works reflect my current preoccupation with beach scenes, perhaps a subconscious longing for warmth and open spaces. As I progress with these pieces, I'm excited to see how they evolve and where they might find their place - be it in upcoming exhibitions or as part of my online portfolio. The process of creation and refinement is ongoing, and I look forward to sharing the final results with you all.
